GONZALO OBANDO

About Gonzalo

Gonzalo is currently a Graduate Assistant & Video Specialist with the Men's Soccer program at the University of Denver. He is pursing his Master's in Sport Coaching from the University of Denver and is a UEFA C Licensed Coach.

Gonzalo is a Peruvian-American dual citizen, and grew up in Rockville, MD, playing for the Bethesda SC, DC United academy and Olney SC and was a 4-year varsity started at the Heights School. Gonzalo was fortunate to compete at and win several prestigious youth tournaments such as the Disney Showcase (Champion), Dallas Cup and Maryland State Cup (2x finalist).

After high school, Gonzalo went on to play academy football at the RIASA Academy in Leeds, UK and also at semi-professional club Eccleshill United. There Gonzalo, truly learned to be a student of the game and was selected to play against several top academies such as Manchester City, Real Sociedad, Leeds United, along with several others. Gonzalo was also invited to train at the Hull City U18 Academy before suffering an ankle injury that kept him on the sidelines for several months.

Upon return to the USA, Gonzalo graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in finance and went on to work on Wall Street in NYC for several years, developing an analytical mindset and critical attention to detail.

​

In 2020, Gonzalo decided to leave Wall Street and apply his analytical skill sets to coaching football and talent development. Gonzalo is passionate about developing players and believes that talent must be understood from a systemic perspective – understanding the relationships and exchanges of various structures within the player and the game.
